Song of the Day: Everybody knows this is nowhere
Everybody knows this is nowhere I did not know this was a Neil Young song. I think I’d like to go back homeAnd take it easyThere’s a woman that I’d like to get to knowLiving thereEverybody seems to wonderWhat it’s like down hereI gotta get away from this day-to-day running around,Everybody knows this is nowhere.Everybody,…
A litany of complaints
This (long distance bike pack racing) is not a great way to feel comfortable, I don’t suppose that’s much news. Regardless, here’s the list, toe to head: No sunburn, no allergies, no bug bites. All in all, better than it could be.
TD Day 8: Davila to Grants NM
Tl:Dr; late start to a long day, land speed record for Team Tailwind Slept out cowboy style last night under a shed awning. Quilt & liner worked great. Slow start to the day. I sewed up the hole I ripped in my shirt, it looks like it was fixed by a blind person. My Heart…
TD Day 7: Davila Ranch – paradise
Tl:Dr; long day, plenty of challenge then: Surprise! Davila Ranch is a donation rest stop paradise. Skip past the preamble to the important part: Davila Ranch. Happy Juneteenth! For various reasons (see Taint Misbehaving) I haven’t been going quite as far as I’d thought. I seem to be petering out around 50-60 miles. Maybe the…
Taint Misbehaving
Hey everybody, long story that I won’t go into right now, but check back on this post later. I have developed some saddle sores that are making things slow going. I’m mostly out of cell service so expect fewer updates. Overall safe and sound. Thanks for your support. After a little double checking, I’m mostly…
Day 6: Black Canyon to TBD
Tl:Dr; Packed up and riding by 8:30. Beaverhead at noon – lots of walking. Washboard downhill is bad. Washboard uphill is far worse. When the grade of the slope gets greater than 5 or so I’m pretty much walking, which means I walked a lot this morning. Found John at Beaverhead work station – waiting…
Strange prairie smell
It almost smells like popcorn. Very buttery.
Day 5 actual: made it! Just bearly.
Tl:Dr; Gila singletrack is hard. Take more water. Trail angles rock, hole in sleeping pad. The plan for today was ride from Silver City to the Black Canyon campground, about 56 miles and 6200 feet of elevation. A fair bit of pavement with hiking trails (aka singletrack) through the Gila National forest. Seems doable… Except:…
Crossing 2
Day 5 plan: Black Canyon campground
The next town is Pietown, some 180 miles & 16k feet of elevation away (those are the conservative numbers, probably 20 miles more TBH). Zero chance of doing that in a day. Most folks seem to stop at Beaverhead – 80+ miles and over 11k feet of elevation. That sounds like a lot. Yesterday was…
