Tl;Dr: I called to cure ballots in Kansas
People vote with ballots. If something is wrong with the ballot (like they forgot to sign it or marked two choices for a single vote) it can still be counted if it is corrected or ‘cured’.
It doesn’t really pay if the race isn’t close. But this year there are some _very_ close races.
So, I signed up to call voters in Kansas who’s ballots need cured.
I signed up with a Kansas Democrats organization via Mobilize.us. I picked a time, and dialed into a Zoom call. There was a small amount of cheer leading (which I see as a big waste of time, I’m already convinced). Then: on to how to do it.
Basically: there is a website that queues up who to call, what to say, and how the interaction goes. Good news, about 70% of it is on that page. Bad news, the other 30% is someplace else. A big monitor helped.
You call the person, wait til they answer then read the script and try to be helpful. The script is… Way too wordy. So I made my own that sounds more like a real person, I keep both on the screen at the same time.
When the person agrees to get their vote counted, you mark down responses. When you’re done, next call.
The people I spoke too were interested and polite. They were surprised that their votes needed fixing, and said they would do it.
I doubt my small contribution will be the deciding factor in this race, but every little bit helps. And, it was easy to do. So – I encourage you+
