Tl;Dr: Wow. Just Wow. Read it.
East of Eden comes up at a must read routinely. After 50 some odd years, I agree.
The prose is very good. Very Well written, and many very good turns of phrase. It’s easy to visualize what he’s describing, very evocative.
The characters are interesting, deep and believable. In some senses the characters are simple – I think they embody themes of the book, and the themes are clear cut. The characters, not so much. Sure, there are mostly evil characters, but not simply evil.
And interesting! I wanted to learn more about them. Lee, the Chinese man servant is a fascinating character. As is Abra.
But the real thing is the themes. Good vs Evil, free will vs fate.
