Anthony Fauci – don’t get sucked into conspiracy

Tl;Dr: Today there’s news about Fauci & COVID 19 sources. Don’t fall for the gossip.

Today somebody walked up to me and said “Oh my God! COVID really was released from a Chinese lab! Anthony Fauci ‘s diary says so!!’ This is an easy trap to fall into, but please please don’t.

Rand Paul, the junior Senator from Kentucky, has been investigating Fauci and ‘Gain of Function’ since before 2021. Today there was a senate review, and Dr. Fauci (and his attny) invoked the 5th. Somehow (I’m still unclear how) Dr. Fauci ‘s diary has now been released to the public, and it contains many different things.

Including this: “On Aug. 24, 2021, he wrote in his diary, “More conspiracy theory like letters keep coming in from congressmen and senators trying to link us to the origin of COVID-19. This is an amazing and unbelievable waste of our time.”

(I believe this is quoted from NPR).

The trap is: Fauci wrote something in private that he kept hidden from the public, but our hero Rand Paul dug it up and now we know the truth!

This misses a lot:

  • This was intended as a _private_ document. The kind of place where you explore thoughts and ideas without the repercussions of having them published.
  • There have been many, many investigations into the source of the covid-19 virus. The consensus has been for a very long time that it came from a wet market in China.
  • Imagine that you consider this diary to be new evidence. The new claims made on behalf of this evidence are extraordinary and require extraordinary evidence.

A private diary containing unfiltered thoughts is not extraordinary evidence.

I feel bad for the people who’ve been taken advantage of by this. I feel even worse for the scientists whose work is coming under political question on a frequent basis. And I feel really embarrassed for our country. Why do our politicians spend so much time making the scientific process highly political??
