Your Homunculus

Tl;Dr: Your brain’s representation of sensation looks really funny

Cortical homunculus

I’m always fascinated by how we see the world, and how that’s different from how our brains process input. For example – we think we see things like a camera (I see a complete colorful picture of what’s going on around me), but we really only see a tiny a fraction of our field of view clearly.

The Dude above (H. Monculous) is a sculptural representation of how many neurons are mapped to your skin sensations. The hands are huge because we have a lot of sensation there (so more neurons in the brain). I think the model above is for skin sensations, not things like sound or vision.

As per usual, this was all mapped out a long time ago, and apparently people just forgot to do this for women. The nice folks at MIT fixed that in 2021.
