Risks and Optimism

(This is a draft of a post I made back on June 12 or so. Posting it today as a bit of a cheat, so I can say I wrote. But, still – I am writing…)

We did a personality inventory at work recently (Discovery Insights), my profile says I’m an inspirer (yay). It also says that I may have blind spots around my optimism. Yeah – although I generally think of these things as horoscope level accuracy – I buy it. And blind spot or not I do think about it.

In general I will do a risky thing, because I think things (and especially things involving people rather than, oh, flipping a coin) tend to work out because people do the right thing, and because I know I’ll be able to figure something out even if it doesn’t work perfectly.

For example: When I boxed my bike, I packed in a bunch of my hiking gear. Including some extra tire sealant and chain lube. At the airport they asked if I had any electronics (I did, Kindle, so I grabbed that). And then I read the sign: No “Chemicals”.

Great – what’s a chemical? I mean: does that mean liquid? Is water a chemical (pretty sure it is). What about water based wax chain lube?

I could have unpacked the whole box and been more scrupulous about following the letter of the law but I did not. Pretty sure it’ll be fine.
