Day 18: Rest in Platoro

Tl;Dr: Taking a break to let things heal down south, kind rainy in Platoro. Check back later, laundry to do

Platoro is a small town (more like Hamlet – apparently nobody stays here in the winter) in S. Colorado – seems like a lot of folks camping, fishing, and doing whatever one does on an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV).

I was recommended to GoldPan RV by a cyclist in Horca. They’ve got a bunk house for $25 a night and I’m the only one in it (I slept on a bottom bunk, for those interested). More food than I could possibly eat, and a rollicking Saturday night party with… 10 people? Seemed like a crowd.

I was feeling pretty good yesterday, but the days before were really tough. The weather today is mixed sun/rain) Thunderstorms and I’m leery about being caught out again at altitude. Del Norte is about 50 miles away (although a lot of high altitude climbing), and I’m anxious to get going but, but, butt…

My saddle sores are not getting better, seem to be worse. Clean clothes, a little time to heal will help. And I’ve got a touch of the trots. Better to rest up a bit than Die of Dysentery (like the Oregon Trail video game). We’ll see how long it takes for Laurel & Hardy to pipe down.

I like your updates. I have the same bike as you, steel Jones LWB plus, and maybe some day I will try this ride. I’m 58 though if I’m going to do it I better do it soon

Hey Michael – glad you’re liking them. The Jones is a great bike for tour divide/GDMBR. Take a look at the ages of the folks in the race, many older than you would think. Perhaps older and wiser just do the GDMBR.
