Plan for Platoro (Day 15 & 16)

Tl;Dr; Colorado is in reach, but more than a day away

Platoro Colorado is the next sizable town on the Tour Divide route – it’s 125ish miles away and ~14k feet of elevation. This is a stretch, since I just did a 70 mile day in… 2 days.

The goal for Day 15 is: Hopewell Lake Campground. About 56 miles away, but the same kind of elevation I did to Abiquiu. There are two small settlements (Vallecitos and Cañon Plaza) and some other shelter between here and there if things really go south.

Day 16: Platoro! Looks like it’s about 70 miles from Hopewell Lake, but: it’s only 200 feet higher in elevation. Still a big elevation day, almost 7k feet of elevation, but mostly *at* elevation, around 9500 feet. There are bail out options at Horca and several campgrounds and lodges along the way.

The real issue is food and water. I have slightly less water carrying capacity since losing my Dromedary lid yesterday, but food’s an even bigger deal. I generally eat less when I camp and more in town. But, I’ve stocked up a bit and will take opportunities as they arise.

It would be nice to see some close up photos of the bad roads so we can picture the ordeal and the effort required…to keep on trucking.

Looks like Horca Gallery and Gifts has pizza and amish pies (?). They close at 6:00. 47 mi. from Hopewell Lake and 4400′ elev. gain. Or you might make it to Platoro and have a burger at Skyline Lodge! They also close at 6:00.
