Tl;Dr: made it to Abiquiu, not sure what’s next. Work in progress, come back later.
Song of the day: Back on the chain gang
Surfaces: highly variable: Santa Fe forest roads: terrible. Everything else: nice pavement
20 miles, even 20 rough miles, doesn’t seem quite adequate, and El Rito is just a bit farther down the road, but it has poor cyclist reviews. May stay here instead. Update: El Rito was lovely, I should have pushed on. The ranger station was very helpful (photo from day 15).
I’m at Retreat on the River a lovely little spot. This place is a bit hard to find, follow the metal crows on the mail boxes (look closely at the red mailbox), take a right on the dirt driveway where it crosses the tiny canal (cienega I think). Wifi, showers, tent camping, a cabin, very basic kitchen not much food. Nice deck over the river.
Bode’s on the freeway in Abiquiu has almost everything you could want, except a belt. The hot food from the kitchen is excellent. Family Dollar is just down the freeway. Abiquiu Inn sounds awesome, seems spendy. Abiquiu is up in the hills off the freeway, takes a little bit of nosing around to find, I didn’t see much of interest. Georgia O’keef’s house is open by appt only. The o’keef design center is very fancy but all free
Not much to say – a longish day in Abiquiu, but mostly cooking, washing, unpacking & repacking. Slept fitfully, up early and ready to go on day 15.
