Day 17: OMFG Colorado!!
Tl;Dr: I made it out of New Mexico, with a few more spills. Now considering life choices in S. Colorado. Lots of hi-fives today. More updates later.
Quick notes:
Saw about 6 SOBO tour divide racers, 4 too depressed to really chat.

Adam & Ashley were great to chat to.

Saw Joe & Joe who were trying the whole bikepacking thing out

Motorcycle Mike was cool to talk to

But the big Trail Angles of the day were Ady & Eugene

They made me a sandwich (my first food of the day at 20 miles), gave me water, orange juice & a V8! Note the Brooks shoes – future friends & family members.
Onward to Horca – the Red Bear was wonderful to stumble on to – after a few days of eating Knorr packaged foods it was so great to have a burger & ice cream. But: they were having a big bash that night and had tent camping only. 80% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow so I wanted to push on to a place with a roof. Friendly red bear patron suggested the GoldPan in Platoro and voila – here I am. Full of salmon, carrots and short ribs (on the house?!?) bunk house all to myself, laundry and shower awaiting.
Two more riders on the way to Platoro:

I hope I wasn’t too discouraging to Sam, but he seems strong and fit – good luck in NM.
I think I saw Darren Gillmore too, but he zipped by while I was taking a leak. Next time Darren.
Back in a bit, or I may be sleeping..

Thanks for the great update today with photos and comments about the people you met. I think you are smart to journey on for a roof at night time.
Are the pictures helpful? There are too many in the All album to add inline, but maybe a few…
Happy to know you have a roof over your head tonight in Platoro. Sleep well. The photos are beautiful and help us to know what you are seeing and biking on ( or walking on).Good luck going forward
I love the photos, seeing other riders, hearing about yours challenges/successes, and your sense of humor.
Happy to hear you have a cozy place to sleep tonight! Keep the photos coming! As others said, it enriches the experience of those of us watching and cheering you on! Rest well
+ 1 for the photos more the merrier, particularly like shots of other riders— Sam from Fremont!
Good to meet you Dave! I just gave up at lake hopewell. Your description of NM didn’t finish me off, torrential downpour and peanut butter mud on the already impossible CDT did. Plus my shifter was starting to fail. See you back in Fremont!
Sam – I generally disapprove of unsolicited advice, but here’s your RDA of it: sleep on it. Give yourself a day off to figure out your shifters. Not promising it will get better, but things often look different in the morning (for me).
Can’t wait to buy you a coffee at the center of the universes.
Oh yeah, and stay at the mystic peddler cyclist hostel in Del Norte. Nicest hosts, cool place, and a queen mattress if you get there early enough.
