In Praise of Home

Tl;Dr: Michael Franti is very good, Home is my favorite Spearhead Album

Home came out in 1994 – I was about 25 when I saw them live in downtown Seattle. I was living the dream – 3ish years into my dream job (computer-land). Perhaps room mates with N. Boxer. This was right around the time I met Marcie (although I don’t think were dating when this came out).

It’s perhaps not surprising that a favorite album was released when you were 25. None the less, Home is a fantastic album.

It’s bassy and funky, with a nice guitar sound through out (nice… Not very descriptive. I could pick it out of a line up, but not sure I could help a sketch artist, sorry).

Mary Harris is a great vocalist. I like how she brings some variety to Michael’s vocals.

The lyrics are really fantastic – heart felt. Caught without an Umbrella is an example – it could be so trite: ‘suicide is bad!’. But it’s just an honest tale of somebody who tried and happily failed.

Lots to say about it, maybe on another day. Just a reminder of a great album…
